Key figures and studies

Last updated date : 21/05/2026

ONLYLYON Tourism initiated the drafting of a charter of best practices for guiding groups around Lyon's UNESCO sector. The charter aims to reconcile the needs of the local community, including residents, users and shopkeepers, with the requirements of tourism. Widely disseminated, it will contribute to the respect and preservation of an exceptional heritage.

Targeting excellence in Lyon's hospitality

As part of the 'Destination of Excellence' initiative aimed at promoting excellence in hospitality and service quality in Lyon, ONLYLYON Tourism, professional guide associations ANCOVART (National Association of City and Art History Tour Guides) and GRENAT (Rhône-Alpes Tour Guide Association), along with the City of Lyon, have published a charter of best practices for visiting the Historic Site of Lyon, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This is a crucial issue for a city that receives over 6 million visitors a year, individuals and groups combined, many of whom opt for guided tours, but also visiting on their own.

Raising awareness and promoting responsibility among visitors to the courtyards and traboules inside the UNESCO perimeter

The aim of the charter is to raise awareness and promote responsibility among the main stakeholders affected by visits to Lyon's UNESCO area, in order to reconcile all uses of the historic site in five key areas:

  • Access to the site
  • Districts visited
  • Respect for the local community
  • Group management
  • Conducting visits

These best practices are designed to show visitors the exceptional nature of Lyon's 427-hectare UNESCO World Heritage Site, mitigate the challenges related to visitor numbers and improve visitor flows.

A widely disseminated charter of best practices

Our team of tourism volunteers will widely disseminate the charter among guiding and tourism professionals covering the UNESCO sector of Lyon.
